In support of
Computer Science Education Week,
nearly all of our classes feature a special opportunity for students to experience a taste of the wonderful world of programming, with
fun activities and challenges.
What is CSEdWeek?
Computer Science Education Week (CSEdWeek) is an annual program dedicated to showing K-12 students the importance of computer science education. Organized each year by the
Code.org Advocacy Coalation, CSEdWeek is held in recognition of the birthday of computing pioneer
Admiral Grace Murray Hopper (December 9, 1906).
What is the Hour of Code?
The Hour of Code is a one-hour
introduction to computer programming, career options, and related training resources. It is designed to demystify writing software and show that anyone can learn.
Who is Backing this Initiative?

Code.org.
Why Are You Doing This?
- There will be 1 million more computing jobs than students over the next 10 years (adding up to $500 billion in salaries).
- More than 50 percent of all projected math and science occupations are in computing occupations.
- Computing occupations are among the highest-paying jobs for new graduates. Yet fewer than 3% of college students graduate with a degree in computer science.
- In 36 states, computer science classes don't count toward math or science high school graduation requirements.
- A.P. Computer Science is taught in only 5% of U.S. high schools.
- Fewer than 20 percent of AP Computer Science students are women. Fewer than 10% are Black/African American and Hispanic/Latino.
... And Then, There Are These Reasons ...
- It's fun!
- It gives kids an outlet for their creativity and imagination.
- It provides a setting for kids to practice problem-solving skills, the engineering process, teamwork, & collaborative skills.
- It is a very rewarding talent that can enhance the value of any individual in any profession, as it is a key 21st century skill.
- Students can be active creators of technology, rather than just passive users of it.
